POEM BY DAVINA MAYOR
My cultural identity and connection to it
My heart was once disconnected from the Union Jack,
But one day, something shifted, and my spirit came back.
As I walked down the street, I heard the roar of the crowd,
And saw the British flag waving, proud and loud.

As a child, I felt the rush of adrenaline and pride,
And knew in my heart that I belonged by their side.
Their roar echoed like wildfire across the nation,
And I felt the love and the joy of their celebration.

But Nigeria was an entirely different place,
A land that held my heritage and my familial grace.
I donned a dress, as if for a wedding or a feast,
And felt the connection to my roots, released.

The food, too, was a source of connection and joy,
As I embraced traditional dishes, once just a ploy.
At first, I was picky, hesitant to try,
But my appetite grew, and I couldn't deny it.

Now, I savour every traditional dish,
And feel the connection to my culture, without a glitch.
These moments are pivotal, and they fill me with glee,
As I celebrate my identity, both British and Nigerian, with glee.
